Tug McGraw Foundation, Tim McGraw's Band Members to Run ING New ...

NAPA, Calif., May 1 /PRNewswire/ -- The Tug McGraw Foundation (TMF), founded in honor of legendary pitcher Tug McGraw to fund research on behalf of brain tumor patients, announced today that it has been invited to be a charity partner for the ING New York City Marathon 2007. Charity partners are given guaranteed entries into the marathon, which otherwise accepts runners on a lottery basis. Runners are allowed to raise funds for the partner organization. Members of TMF Honorary Chairman Tim McGraw's band, the Dancehall Doctors, will be among those running for the Foundation.

As a baseball fan, the thing that interests me the most about modern country star Tim McGraw (39 today) is that he is the son of screwball '80s relief pitcher Tug McGraw. See, every baseball fan has a warm place in his or her heart for the oddball pitchers, like Mitch Williams, the mulletted Phillie who fell off the mound after every pitch, or Mark "The Bird" Fidrych, who talked to the ball before throwing it. Not really sure what Tug did, exactly, to put him in with these guys, but I know it was something. One of Tug's best seasons was with a team whose performance in 1969 was dubbed a "miracle" by the press: which team?
